Job DescriptionSUMMARY OF
Responsibilities:
This class is responsible for performing operational/laboratory/maintenance functions in a water/wastewater treatment plant.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, checking vaults/pumps, and electronic instruments for proper functioning; conducting analysis; cleaning/changing out pumps; taking samples, and testing for proper chemical feed; regulating/adjusting pumps/blowers/valves, and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions; checking influent/effluent points for visual detection of irregularities/proper functioning; using SCADA to monitor proceses and process equipment both at the plant and in the distribution system; preparing/maintaining/ reviewing records/laboratory results; identifying necessary changes in chemical/biological/mechanical plant processes/ functions to meet discharge limits; recording data from various meters/gauges/dials; logging all activities; uses work and asset management tools for time entry, work order submission; at the Water Treatment Facilities coordinate with other utilities in meeting demands of combined wholesale customers.
Operates under direct supervision, in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Availability for rotating shifts, on call, and call back are required.
Performs related work as required.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
Water/wastewater treatment instruments, gauges/valves, communication, and other equipment as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Good knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures; working knowledge of applicable federal/state/local laws, ordinances/permitting requirements; working knowledge of chemical/biological principles pertinent to water/wastewater treatment plant operations, and standard laboratory tests/procedures; ability to perform routine laboratory tests; ability to maintain detailed records; ability to work in confining areas; ability to perform accurate mathematical computations and read/interpret schematics/drawings/blueprints; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees.
MINIMUM
Qualifications:
(either) (A) Graduation from an accredited two (2) year college with an Associate's Degree in plumbing, industrial maintenance technology, engineering technology, science technology, or related field, and a minimum of one (1) year related experience; OR (B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in distribution/collection system maintenance, laboratory analysis, operation of a water/wastewater treatment plant, or related field; OR (C) An equivalent combination of education/training and experience as defined in (A) and (B) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Functional Employment Test (FET) required.
Must possess/maintain a valid North Carolina Driver's license.
Must obtain/maintain Grade C certification for water treatment by the State of North Carolina within eighteen (18) months, and a Grade II license for Wastewater Operations within (24) months of employment in the position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
SAFETY HAZARDS:
Exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, gases, loud noises, odors, oils and other hazards associated with working around water, and raw wastewater.
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
As required in the Public Works Commission's Safety Manual.
