Accounting Technician

Examines, verifies, and maintains financial accounts and accounting data, and classifies accounting transactions including the verification of the accuracy and completeness of the accounting data. Receives and analyzes various types of documents to determine propriety, validity, budget, expenditure limitation, completeness and correctness of accounting data. Determines proper cost centers, budget object codes (BOC), appropriations and fund control points to be entered into a computerized cost accounting system. Responsible for the accurate classification and processing of accounting transactions to include selection of appropriate financial transaction types, appropriate supporting documentation/ justifications for transactions, periodic auditing, and accurate timely completion preparation of reports. Researches, interprets, and verifies which appropriation, costing and accounting transaction type for documents and makes changes to the transactions as appropriate to ensure accuracy and completeness. Responsible for recording the debt in the proper account and appropriation and applying diligent follow-up and collection actions. Serves as a principal point of contact for medical center clients/ customers regarding accounts receivable; provides an explanation of accounts either by phone or through correspondence to internal and external parties. Manages bank debit voucher for insufficient funds, etc., increase/ decrease adjustments to accounts receivable, look up billing information, verification of bank deposits for payments received for refunds received. Functions as an alternate Agent Cashier in the absence of the primary Agent Cashiers; disburses cash payments to patients, employees and other individuals. Functions as an alternate Employee Travel Assistant in the absence of the primary Employee Travel Assistant; schedules and develops travel plans for employee arranged government travel. Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Using accounting terminology and account codes relating to an automated system; balancing and reconciling accounts and records; collecting and compiling accounting data to prepare reports; preparing status of funds reports; performing monthly reconciliations/adjustments of accounts payable and accounts receivable; entering accounting transactions into an automated data management system; processing and verifying invoices; replenishing petty cash funds; and working from a variety of accounting documents and/or systems.( To receive credit for these skills, they must be documented in your resume.) Physical Requirements:
The work is mostly sedentary, but does require some walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting of file storage boxes. The storage boxes weigh approximately 15-20 pounds each and are located in another building and at times the incumbent is required to retrieve them. Long periods of sitting at a computer terminal are involved. Because of rigid deadlines inherent to all aspects of this position, the employee works under pressure. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
