Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy Technician (Controlled Substances and Narcotics) Duties include:
Works closely with the Controlled Substance/Narcotic Section supervisor in implementing operational policies and procedures dealing with narcotic drug distribution and control in accordance with manuals, directives and station memoranda Prepares, monitors and analyzes usage reports of narcotic controlled drugs by each nursing unit Reports deviations in normal usage to his/her supervisor Fills outpatient pharmacy prescriptions Educates pharmacy technicians on handling, transport and security of controlled drugs. Coordinates delivery of narcotic drugs by pharmacy to pt. care units, ambulatory care and mail-out prescriptions Prepare narcotic drug stock orders, ensure accuracy in distribution to nursing units Maintains inventory/security of narcotic and controlled drugs in the vault Monitors signatures acknowledging receipt of drugs on order forms thereby minimizing the potential forgery. Determines and maintains adequate stock levels of narcotic drugs to ensure proper patient care; accurately performs biennial controlled substance inventory for Pharmacy Service. Incumbent must be proficient in the utilization of professional, scientific and company literature and be able to retrieve any information regarding narcotic drug products stocked in the pharmacy. Answers inquiries for information on narcotic drugs in stock, new narcotic drugs, narcotic dosage forms, stabilities, contraindications, side effects, etc. without consulting members of the professional pharmacy staff. Bulk compounds stock items, which involves weighing, measuring and mixing bulk quantities of complex narcotic pharmaceuticals, including solutions, powders, creams, suspensions, emulsions, paste, etc. Operates and takes proper care of complex pharmaceutical equipment, such as precision balance, electric balance mixing and filtering devices, filling machines, label making equipment, etc. and packaging and labeling such products. Requires sustained extended periods of standing, stretching, and reaching in the course of his/her tour of duty. Pharmacy Technician (Automation) The Automation/ADPAC position will have the duties of coordinating and implementing Decentralized Hospital Computer Program (DHCP) modifications to new and existing Pharmacy software. The incumbent is delegated the responsibility for daily operational activities in specialized Pharmacy Office Automated Data Processing (ADP) applications, which are used in Outpatient Pharmacy, Inpatient Pharmacy, and clinics that interface with Pharmacy software. The incumbent also works with program site parameters to the characteristics of the Fayetteville VAMC Pharmacy to provide the department with the maximum flexibility and benefit of the Decentralized Hospital Computer Programmer/Automated Date Processing (DHCP/ADP) software programs. Incumbent will serve as the trouble-shooter in all matters related to ADP functions and submit requests for additional ADP hardware, replacement equipment, relocation of hardware, and equipment repair. Will support Omnicell system and other automated systems as available. Incumbent will need to serve as pharmacy technician, including work with controlled substances, when required by workload, including possible night/weekend rotation assignments during staff shortages. The incumbent works with supervision in managing and defining the Pharmacy users, establishing the user menu, and determining user access to ensure appropriate use and security of the Pharmacy and Medical Center ADP software programs, and the comprehensive patient database. The incumbent shall be in charge of gathering data and preparing reports for top management. When requested, the ADP coordinator will also provide computer generated pharmacy related patient care data to Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, Drug Utilization Evaluation Subcommittee, Primary Care Committee Quality Improvement Committee, and other committees for the purpose of evaluating the quality of patient care. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring timely and accurate Reports Control and Data Validation of all Pharmacy ADP generated reports. Physical Demands The work is mostly sedentary with a large percentage at the time spent in an office area interacting with a computer terminal. The tasks of training, staff development and trouble shooting require that the incumbent interface with various Pharmacy activities (i.e., inpatient, outpatient and administrative), as well as other services and personnel in the Medical Center. The activities necessitate the need to walk to many areas of the Medical Center. Work Schedule:

A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities. Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff. Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
