Medical Technician - Phlebotomist

NOTE:
Intermittent employment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty. A position with an intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance. Intermittent positions offer health insurance only if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days. The major duties include but are not limited to:
Performs blood collection and specimen labeling; Draws or removes blood on patients according to physician orders to obtain a sample for analysis and diagnosis; Correctly identifies each patient using at least two valid, acceptable patient identifiers as required; Correctly identifies acceptable venipuncture site or finger stick site (for bleeding times); Maintains sterile technique and performs venipuncture according to guidelines; Draws appropriate number and types of tubes of blood, ensuring that tubes meet quality and volume standards required for optimum clinical sampling; Performs Glucose Tolerance Tests, Bleeding Times and other specialized blood collections as indicated; Maintains laboratory facilities and equipment and controls supplies; Greets, receives and checks in patients in the outpatient blood draw lab; Performs computer search for past and future lab test orders for all patients presenting to the lab to assure all appropriate testing is done; Ensures correct routing of clinical samples to laboratory sections, informing other staff of sample urgency as necessary; Monitors requisitions, receives and stores shipments noting damage, contamination, hemolysis, shortage or other errors in shipment Maintains records of laboratory blood draws, unacceptable samples, lab procedures and related documents; Processes a wide variety of complex specimens from hospitalized patients and patients from outpatient and community based clinicals; Receives, routes and stores specimens noting labeling, contamination, hemolysis, shortage or other errors in sampling, recognizing common environmental or other considerations that could affect the results; Receives and prepares patient specimens for shipment to other VA laboratories or reference laboratories; Assists higher graded technicians in performing a variety of laboratory procedures; Operates a centrifuge to obtain cell-free serum ensuring all infection control procedures are observed; and Performs other related duties as assigned. Experience:
You must have at least (6) months of general experience and (6) months of specialized experience which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the Medical Technician - Phlebotomist position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. General Experience is:
(1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience include:
(a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Note:
Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week. OR Education:
You must have successfully completed (a) an associate - degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the two (2) year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) One (1) year of study that included six (6) semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of a full-time training course of approximately a year's duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients; or (c) two (2) years of study that included at least twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, community college, junior college, college or university. NOTE:

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
