Intermediate Care Technician

Duties to include but not limited to:
Performs observation-based screening and collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel; Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situation in an emergency setting; Performs duties focused on communication techniques required to complete the questioners and templates approved for use in the ED; Assists ED licensed personnel with the delivery of patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations; Initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS) and use of automatic external defibrillator (AED); Assists with airway management using bag-valve-mask (BVM), oral airway or nasal airway; Operates specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus in accordance with applicable training and standards; Observes patient status and keeps licensed personnel informed of any change in condition; Provides support, relief, and coverage as needed to central station telemetry; Performs measures of PR, QRS, QT, RR, and QTC intervals, interprets rhythm, and prints rhythym strip every 8 hours or as required for events and informs appropriate staff; Recognizes lethal rhythms/arrhythmias and immediately notifies appropriate staff; Participates in the triage process by assisting with patient transport, obtaining vital signs, performing screens, gathering pertinent health history, medication history, and information about the chief complain. Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note:

Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
experience as a first responder to emergent situations, experience with extracting, assisting, moving , lifting, transferring and transporting patients, experience in obtaining and documenting patient's vital signs, experience in recognizing emergency situations and episodes of patient deterioration and responding appropriately, experience in utilizing S-BAR format to verbally report and/or document, and experience in venipuncture and collection of specimens. OR, Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must demonstrate the following; Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. . OR, Combination:
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Minimum Qualifications for GS-6:

A working knowledge of the methods, techniques and practices appropriate to medical technology and their practical application to Intermediate Care Technician work. Specialized Experience Defined for GS-7:
A thorough understanding and extensive knowledge of the methods, techniques and practices appropriate to medical technology and their practical application to Intermediate Care Technician work. The ability to work independently of direct supervision on-call and the evening, night shifts and/or on the weekends. Preferred Qualification:
ACLS (Advance Cardiac Life Support) certification and former military medics/corpsman highly desired. Preferred Qualifications/
Experience:
Intermediate Care Technician positions with the VA were designed for former military medic and corpsman. Individuals that are selected as Intermediate Care Technicians must be a former military medic or corpsman. Preferred Certification/
Experience:
ACLS (Advance Cardiac Life Support), BLS (Basic Life Support) certification. Former Military Medic experience is highly desired. (Ex:
Combat Medic, Corpsman) You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:

Physical Requirements:
This work requires a level of physical fitness that allows for standing for extended periods, heavy lifting to position patients, and manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures. The work will require recurrent bending, lifting, stooping, standing, squatting, stretching, sitting and walking.
