Medical Technician (Microbiology)

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Collects, prepares, examines, and processes specimens (blood, body fluids); Prepares slides, smears, cultures, etc., of extremely delicate and/or volatile specimens; Performs microscopic evaluations of specimens; Performs chemical analysis of blood, urine, and other body fluids and substances; Operates instrumentation that perform blood cell testing with the newest methodologies which include impedance testing, flow cytometry, immunochemical staining; Operates instrumentation for semi-quantitative and quantitative measurements of chemical and cellular constituents in urine specimens; Operates instrumentation for the determination of prothrombin time for warfarin monitoring, activated partial thromboplastin time, and d-dimer testing; Sets up cultures, performs specimen staining and isolation of bacteria; Operates analyzers to include performing calibrations, preventative maintenance, proficiency testing; Performs tests for blood typing and cross matching (ABO group and Rh typing), and screens for any unanticipated antibodies; Supports pathologists in defining the presence of infection or other irregular disorders; Trains new staff and phlebotomy students in accessioning and phlebotomy; Assists providers and others in locating results, adding tests to existing orders, explaining collection procedures, etc.; Packages and ships diagnostic specimens to reference labs, in accordance with established procedures, regulations; Maintains and controls laboratory records; Maintains laboratory stock and orders materials, as needed; Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule:
Intermittent, to include holidays/weekends. NOTE:
Intermittent employment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty. A position with an intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance. Intermittent positions offer health insurance only if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days. Designated Drug-Testing Position:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY - In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration. Experience performing phlebotomy duties (blood draws) on humans. AND, in addition to meeting the English Language Proficiency and Selective Placement Factor , applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Experience:
Requires one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in Federal Service that has given you the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Medical Technician. Specialized experience includes:
(a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings and/or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques of a Medical Lab Technician. (Resume(s) must clearly support the duties and experience required for this position. We will not make assumptions regarding experience.) -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED):
Requires successful completion of one (1) full year of graduate level study at an accredited college or university leading to a master's degree, with major study in subjects appropriate to the GS-7 Medical Technician position, which may include clinical hematology, clinical laboratory practices, phlebotomy practicum, clinical microbiology, clinical practicum, or special topics in the Medical Laboratory Technology field. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED):
